Two Counties – One Vision

Nestled in northern Germany, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is a region celebrated for its breathtaking natural landscapes and its vast network of lakes. For decades, it has been a favorite destination for tourists seeking relaxation and outdoor adventure. Yet, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is much more than a holiday retreat. It’s a trailblazer in Europe, focusing on the protection and sustainable use of its invaluable water resources. Particularly in the counties of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte and Vorpommern-Greifswald, innovative technologies are at the forefront of efforts to safeguard these pristine environments for future generations.

A Crown Jewel of Europe’s Lakelands

With more than 2,000 lakes, countless rivers, and a picturesque Baltic Sea coastline, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania boasts one of Europe’s most diverse aquatic landscapes. The Mecklenburg Lake Plateau, the largest connected lake region in Germany, is a haven for nature enthusiasts and water sports lovers alike. Whether paddling across tranquil waters, sailing on expansive lakes, or hiking along untouched shores, this region offers experiences that few places in Europe can rival. But its waters are more than just a scenic attraction.

These waterways are vital to the region’s ecosystem, serving as a habitat for a wide variety of plant and animal species and playing a key role in preserving biodiversity. Additionally, the lakes are essential for water supply and climate regulation. Their ability to store CO₂ and provide cooling effects makes them significant contributors to combating climate change. Protecting these ecosystems is therefore not just about conservation—it’s an investment in the region’s climate resilience.

Leading the Way in Water Protection

The counties of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte and Vorpommern-Greifswald have taken a pioneering role in the sustainable management of their natural water resources. By embracing state-of-the-art technology, they are not only preserving these invaluable resources but also setting a benchmark for future-oriented water management. Digitalization, in particular, has opened new doors for innovative water monitoring.

We were delighted to see these counties take bold steps as part of the Federal Ministry’s Smart City Model Project (MPSC). Their initiative, “meer.zukunft.seen.”, exemplifies how digital solutions can revolutionize water management. Together with IKT-Ost AöR (Institution under public law) from Neubrandenburg, we share a commitment to modernizing limnology data collection. By digitalizing the process, we can identify critical changes in water systems early, ensuring effective responses. This approach benefits not only environmental protection but also the region’s thriving tourism sector.

Harnessing Technology for Climate-Resilient Water Management

It has been nearly six months since we joined the “meer.zukunft.seen.” project, and the progress has been remarkable. Our WAMO monitoring stations are now fully operational, providing reliable data since August from locations such as Tollensesee. This data, accessible through the SWIM portal, equips partners with valuable insights. While winter is a quieter time for lakes, their ecosystems remain vibrant—just as deserts hold hidden life, so do lakes during the colder months.

Beyond environmental benefits, our WAMO technology strengthens the region’s appeal as a sustainable travel destination. Tourists are drawn not only by the natural beauty but also by the region’s dedication to innovation and environmental stewardship. This approach supports “gentle tourism,” which carefully balances ecological conservation with local community needs.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania contribution to Europe’s Future

The unique natural and aquatic landscapes of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are treasures worth protecting. The innovative spirit of the counties of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte and Vorpommern-Greifswald demonstrates that modern conservation and economic growth can go hand in hand. Sustainable water management creates value for the environment, local residents, and visitors alike.

By combining sustainable tourism with technological innovation, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania offers a blueprint for a livable future. Its mix of natural beauty and forward-thinking solutions makes it one of Europe’s most precious natural regions and an inspiring example for other regions aiming to integrate sustainable water and nature conservation.
