Why municipalities need faster water data.

Laboratory results take 7 to 9 days

With manual sampling, more than a week passes between sample and result – by which time the state of the water body has long since changed.

Cyanotoxins are life-threatening

Toxins such as microcystin can be life-threatening on contact or if swallowed. Mandatory microcystin testing has been in force since 2026.

Every day of closure costs money

A bathing ban causes economic damage in the five-figure range per day – for restaurants, boat rental operators and campsites.

Project goal

A water-body management platform for municipalities.

Live data on water quality and water levels, securely captured and transmitted to public authorities – as a basis for early warning and recommended action. The data comes from the solar-powered, self-sufficient WAMO measurement stations.

Main result

A dashboard that is in use – not in the lab.

The RoSyRe dashboard is in production at dashboard.e-ray.eu: map overview of all measuring sites, real-time parameters, interactive time series and CSV export – with live data from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Security to standard

DIN SPEC 91377 implemented, BSI C5 largely fulfilled, NIS2 framework addressed – security by design for municipal operations.

End-to-end in production

WAMO → encrypted transmission (SFTP/VPN) → API → dashboard. Hosted in Germany, tenants cleanly separated.

Reliable in operation

Monthly uptime monitoring with around 99.7 % availability – proven in winter operation down to −18.5 °C.

21 WAMO stations in real-world operation

Not a laboratory test bench: since 2025, 21 WAMO stations have been running continuously in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – the largest commercial water-quality project in Germany.

“Bathing and Water Status” widget

Concept and user study, validated with municipalities: clear information for the public on municipal websites – weather, water temperature, water quality index and official bathing water information in one place.

e-Box: remote monitoring

Compact LTE module (solar-powered, microcontroller) for monitoring the WAMO stations – successfully tested in a multi-week field test.

Water quality index (WQI)

Concept based on chlorophyll-a, phycocyanin, oxygen, turbidity and pH. The final assessment remains with the responsible authority – every warning rests on a human decision.

    M1 · Design prototype & requirements list

    Requirements analysis, hardware qualification and hourly capture of readings – achieved on schedule, with real field data instead of laboratory trials.

  • 10/2025

    M2 · End-to-end MVP

    In production from sensor to dashboard: GraphQL API, map overview, time series, account management and encrypted transmission.

  • 12/2025

    M3 · Water quality index & reports

    Data pipeline built, WQI and HABI approaches examined. Forecasting deliberately defined as future work – reliable predictions require multi-year data series.

  • 04/2026

    M4 · Prototype in line with DIN SPEC 91377

    Dashboard in productive use with monthly uptime monitoring; widget concept rated positively by municipal partners.

Outlook

What comes after the project.

  1. Nowcasting

    Real-time condition assessment as a precursor to forecasting – the early-warning system deliberately remains future work until multi-year data series are available.

  2. Widget to product maturity

    The “Bathing and Water Status” concept is being developed further for integration into municipal websites.

  3. e-Box as a series module

    From a successful prototype to a reliable series module for remote monitoring.

  4. Multi-factor authentication

    Targeted hardening of the platform for use in security-critical environments.

  5. Scaling

    From Hesse into other federal states – following the tenders tied to the WFD cycle and mandatory microcystin testing.
