In many places water quality is assessed through manual sampling, typically on a four-week cycle. Between two visits the condition of a water body goes unobserved – and that is precisely where algal blooms, oxygen crashes and pollution peaks build up.
SWIM addresses that gap: continuous, near-real-time information on surface waters instead of a monthly snapshot. One focus is the early detection of harmful algal blooms.

The stations in the water supply the continuous point value and anchor the satellite analysis to measured quantities.
From the two comes the evaluation that arrives in the dashboard as a map, a time series and an alert.

SWIM is both a product and a project name. As a platform the software has its own product page; as a European research undertaking it continues under SWIM Extensions.
