The European Environment Agency compiled the state of Europe’s waters in 2024. Its findings outline why the project exists.

of surface waters reach good ecological status. Only 29 percent meet the chemical standards.
Floods
are occurring more often and more intensely – with consequences for ecosystems and for drinking water supply.
Standing waters are particularly sensitive – lakes, wetlands and reservoirs. They store carbon, serve as water reserves and carry habitats, yet they respond far more slowly to countermeasures than running waters do.
Capture water quality and water levels continuously, so that cyanobacteria, pollution and critical level changes can be answered sooner.
Derive management strategies from the data – grounded in observation rather than in rules of thumb.
Develop solutions that also hold up in water-scarce regions in Europe and worldwide.
Support communities that are particularly exposed to water scarcity and environmental pressure.
The undertaking was funded under the Horizon Europe Space Programme. Administrative coordination sat with O.M. Offshore Monitoring, technical coordination with e.Ray.
